Firstly, look at the Matariki pou and talk about what symbols are in the picture. Which star could they represent?

After looking at the whetū and their symbols your learners can decide on what symbols represent them.

As a result of this they can begin their pou.

Through the simple scaffolded process tamariki can draw their own beautiful pou.

FEEDBACK from around the globe.

Really great art project! This gave me the chance to introduce my students to an amazing culture that most knew little or nothing about. I looked up and read the suggested story to students. I had the students add their own personal touches to their Poupou. We colored ours with markers and they look great!

Used the projector to show images. Inspirational

So easy to follow the steps and produce beautiful pieces of art. Thank you!

What a great resource and easy for a non-art teacher to use! I teach a Global Studies Class and love to incorporate authentic cultural art projects whenever I can. The kids will love making life sized Pou Pou!

Thanks Michele, I used these in my class as an inspiration for the Creation Story and the teacher next door was so impressed she wanted a copy of this unit so I bought her one.

The whole school was amazed at how my year 1s had created such awesome artwork. We used Gavin bishops Rangi and Papa to learn about the Maori gods, then drew practise poupou using the guidelines. We then used our own creativity to draw the poupou representing the Maori gods by holding different things and making colour choices. At assembly the kids enjoyed sharing their art and saying the names of the gods. Thank you for this.

Kia ora! I used this resource to create tangata to adorn our class entry into Whare Manaaki (ILE). We made amo and these characters we used to help us construct our own korero about our kura. The characters are our 12 apostles. Thank you very much. The tangata look awesome as you walk into the room.
